This Intel Pentium Silver N4000-powered Acer Chromebook 314 Spin puts a twist on the standard budget Chromebook with a touchscreen display and a convertible, laptop-or-tablet design — a rare find in the sub-$300 price range. (128GB of eMMC storage is better than a lot of the competition, too.) Amazon has it marked down to $299.99, which is a 21% savings.

Full disclosure: This Acer Swift X laptop isn't on sale just yet, but it will be soon as part of an invite-only deal for Prime members during Amazon's annual Prime Day sale (scheduled for July 11 and 12). You can throw your hat in the ring just by clicking the "Request invite" button on its product page; if selected for the doorbuster, you'll receive an email with a unique link to buy it during the event. It's worth the hassle, IMO: This 512GB configuration with an AMD Ryzen 7 processor actually retails for $1,099.99(opens in a new tab), so your total savings are even higher than Amazon is letting on with its $912 list price. (It works out to a 43% discount.)

Why we like it

Announced during Apple's jam-packed Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote in early June, the new 15-inch MacBook Air upgrades its 13-inch predecessor with a bigger display and two extra speakers. It retains the same M2 chip, 18-hour battery life, and quiet, fanless design. Amazon wasted no time in putting it on sale, and the base configuration with 256GB of storage is currently sitting at an all-time low price(opens in a new tab) of $1,199 — a $100 savings. (That matches the Apple Store's education discount for students, teachers, and school staff members.)

  • Around Amazon Prime Day, which is scheduled for Tuesday, July 11 and Wednesday, July 12 this year

  • During back-to-school sales in July and August

  • When retailers' Black Friday and holiday deals are in full swing from October to December

Laptops also tend to get cheaper right after manufacturers announce next-generation models, which explains why we're seeing some good MacBook deals in the wake of WWDC.

Best Buy tends to be the best major retailer for laptop deals, followed by Amazon and Walmart. That said, all three sell a lot of discounted models and often inflate original list prices, making their discounts look better than they actually are.
