Knights and shapeshifters abound in the first trailer for Netflix's upcoming Nimona, an animated adventure that is also one of the best movies of the year.

Based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson (who also brought us the recent reboot of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Nimona transports us to a futuristic medieval kingdom in turmoil. The realm's queen has been killed — and everyone's convinced commoner-turned-knight Ballister Blackheart (voiced by Riz Ahmed) is responsible.

As Ballister fights to clear his name, he reluctantly teams up with spunky shapeshifter Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz). Their team-up is an odd couple situation: Nimona craves chaos and murder, while Ballister just wants to prove his innocence and reconcile with his partner Ambrosius Goldenloin (voiced by Try Guy, Eugene Lee Yang). Despite their differences, these two outcasts will uncover a great evil within the realm, and learn valuable lessons about identity and challenging authority along the way.

Nimona hits Netflix June 30.(opens in a new tab)
